Theatre
I am a theatre nerd. Not only do I love going to the theatre, I am proud to have been a part of it. I acted all throughout high school and college and have always been, and continue to be, an avid theatergoer. Each show I've been a part of or seen has taught me valuable lessons not only about acting itself, but about navigating the world around me. These are some of my favorite shows I've been a part of, characters I've played, and the lessons they taught me. While I may not be actively pursuing acting, it constantly influences my work. It is part of my story and made me who I am today.
The Tempest - Miranda
The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, is a play about magic, betrayal, love and forgiveness.
This was my first lead in a play, so it taught me to push past my nerves and trust my instincts. I'm also a huge Shakespeare fan, so getting to understand his language on a deeper level was a fun process.
Epic Proportions - Louise
Set in the 1930s, it tells the story of brothers Benny and Phil and their messy, hilarious love triangle with Louise.
Because this was an outrageous farce, this show taught me to take big chances, laugh at myself, and fail forward.
Twelfth Night -
Viola
A romantic comedy that centers on the twins Viola and Sebastian, identity mix-ups, and love entanglements.
Viola was always a dream role of mine, so getting to play her as my last role in college was a goal I worked very hard for. This show taught me the importance of confidence when leading a project (not to mention, it was really fun pretending to be male for 3/4 of the play).
Shakespeare
William Shakespeare is, without a doubt, one of my favorite playwrights. It took me awhile to warm up to his plays, but once I gained an understanding of the language I learned to love reading, seeing, and acting in Shakespeare's plays. The way you can change the meaning of a line by simply emphasizing a different syllable is mesmerizing to me. Below are some of my personal favorites that I hope can act as a starting-off point for anyone who might be lukewarm to the idea Shakespeare and his plays.
